“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:It's about time for those Christmas wish lists to get rollin. My wife asked me what I want for Christmas - I said "world peace." Well, that may not happen this year, but in the frenzy of Black Friday, or Cyber Monday, one way that we can stand for justice is to shop smart. Here's a tool by Not For Sale, a nationwide campaign to end human trafficking (slavery): Free2Work. You can research brands that you are looking into buying, and they give grades based on publicly available information and data self-reported by the company. Free2Work conducts each evaluation using a 60+ question assessment tool that focuses on the brand’s labor policies and practices. Questions fall in four categories: Policies, Transparency & Traceability, Monitoring & Training, and Worker Rights. They even have an iphone app where you can scan a product's UPC to get ratings (if they are listed). If a company isn't listed there, I recommend researching online to find any connections to sweat shops or unethical practices.
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?
Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?" Isaiah 58:6&7
The cost? Time. Maybe paying more for a product, or going without.
However, the more I learn about atrocities such as human trafficking, the more I'm convinced that it's worth it.
